Welcome to my studio
My creative process is free and explorative, where I work with a variety of materials such as sheet metal, linen canvas, hardboard, and Japanese paper. I primarily use acrylic and ink, often thinned with plenty of water, and I rarely apply them with a brush, instead using special tools that give a more vibrant expression.
Structures and repeating patterns are central to my work, and I strive for each motif to have a clear crispness. The frames I use are usually handmade in iron, but for some works, I also choose treated oak frames to enhance the overall impression.
As a customer, you can choose an existing motif, and I'm happy to help come up with suggestions that fit your specific context. You also have the option to order a custom-made artwork, entirely based on your own wishes. For the best results, we'd love to meet in my studio, where we can explore materials and expressions together to create something that feels just right for you.

Selection from previously curated art
The exhibition at Galleri Nord has concluded
Mats Wieslander (art), Yemisi Wilson (sculpture), and Niklas Mörnerud (art). Artist talk at 1:00 PM on the opening day. February 28 – March 12.
The art exhibition at Slettvoll is closed
Thank you all for a packed opening and a very rewarding art exhibition with my co-exhibitor Britt-Marie Tidemand. Visitors to Sletvoll have seen two completely different expressions of art running in parallel in the store and this in combination with Sletvoll's matching interior.
Viewing in the studio
If you want to book a viewing in my studio at EA Rosengrens Gata 27 in Gothenburg, please email me at mats@artbywieslander.se and we will find a suitable time.

Order by request
If you're thinking about a bespoke measure with custom color tones, read this.
Special order from a private customer. Here I have synchronized both format and color choice with the customer for this interior from legendary Minotti. The artwork, which is on sheet metal in 2800 x 1200 mm format, picks up the surrounding unsaturated colors.
I discussed the choice of materials with the customer and it fell on oxidized sheet metal with acrylic and ink and a solid iron frame around it.
To start, I took a photo of the wall and took measurements. Then I sketched different sizes in Photoshop and the customer got to see suggestions. Then as a black frame with a single-colored field only. After the customer decided on the size of the motif, I sketched the color scheme in general in Photoshop and we came up with what tones the motif should contain.
Then it was time to create the artwork and weld the frame.
I sent pictures to the customer as I went along and when the subject was ready for 70 %, the customer had to come and look to comment on whether the subject should be lighter or darker etc. When the artwork was ready in the studio, the customer approved the motif. I mounted everything in the frame and brought the metal brackets and the whole artwork weighing 65 kg to the final destination. After assembling the brackets and lifting the artwork together, everything ended up in place, exactly as sketched.
Satisfied customer and satisfied artist.
Creation of "Silent Rain" 170 x 210 cm
My vision with this artwork was to combine a warm flame background and with the white dots create a slightly cooler expression. The motif gives a vivid feeling and the dots almost move when you look at the motif. You can also control the feeling with warm light that brings out the underlying tone or have a little cooler light and bring out the bright ”rain” drops. Thank you Maria at Rammakeriet for your patience. It is not easy to frame a work of this size. Love from The Rammakery. Linen cloth and kilram from Swedframe.
The artwork ”Silent Rain” is on display and for sale at Slettvoll in Gothenburg.

Elements of the beginning 2025
Concluded spring exhibition at Gallery A41 in Gothenburg.
In Elements of the Beginning (31 artworks), I approach the first breath of the earth - the time when matter, energy and motion had not yet separated. The works are born out of a fascination with the power of origins: how everything comes into being, changes and dissolves in a constant cycle of becoming.
Through layers of color, texture and light, I seek the moment where the solid meets the ephemeral - where the weight of stone merges with the movement of mist, where fire, water, air and earth still speak the same language. In these encounters, the rhythm of nature emerges, the hidden pulse that shapes all living things and at the same time reminds us how fragile and temporary every form is.
The exhibition is a journey through the origins of the elements and the interplay between creation and dissolution. It bears traces of storm and stillness, of volcanic heat and icy silence - but also of the poetic space in between. Elements of the Beginning is an interpretation of the beginning of the world, but also of each new moment when something takes shape for the first time.
Art inspired by the structures of nature
Nature has always been my greatest source of inspiration. I am fascinated by the constancy of nature, but also by the ephemeral, such as a wave that flashes or the light that wanders during a temporary change of weather. Since I often create on oxidized sheet metal and with a lot of water and with long drying times, the natural process takes place in the creation
